Well we have had quite a few nice days recently so me and Mrs JustAddNasi decided it would be great to cool down after work. We live in South East Cornwall, and Seaton beach is very close to us. So we decided to take a drive down on the first evening we had a great swim water was cold going in but we soon got used to and had a great time.
So the next day when I got home from work we decided to go again. We drove down in the convertible Beetle making the most of the sunshine as you do when you can get the chance to do these things. We were in the water just chilling and floating around cooling off and I stood up. Ahhhh!!!! what was that!!! that was sharp!! Oh fu**!!! I am really hurting Mrs Nasi is just laughing and saying “What’s up with you ?” “I have to get out of the water” I say “I’m in a lot of pain!!”
So we get out and go sit on the beach so I can have a look at my foot to see what I had done. My foot was starting to swell and was quite red, but the pain it was probably the worst pain I can remember having.
So we decide to go home as the treatment is to put the affected area in hot water. It is at this point that I realise that I can now hardly walk so the car has to come to me at the edge of the beach .
The treatment recommended is to place your foot in water as hot as you can bear for at least 10 minutes, however some web pages recommend at least 45 mins so I went in the middle and left it for about 25 mins. The hot water apparently breaks down the the poison from the fish, and it worked the pain did ease although it didn’t completely go. A week later it feels like my foot is brused.
I have lived in this area on and off most of my life and had never heard of anyone getting stung buy a weever fish, yet after all sorts of people spring up with their warnings.
All I can say is if you are swimming in the sea of South East Cornwall coast in the summer take care and maybe wear beach shoes or a wet suite, but if you don’t have that maybe move your foot through the sand as you walk to scare the fish.
