When insulating camper vans there has been many debates about whether loft installation is good or bad.  For a start we have the fibre glass type and the wool type, well fibreglass as we all know is itchy to the touch so not very nice to use.  Now then of course there is sheep’s wool insulation too.  This is much easier to use mainly because it can be handled without protection and therefore is easier to push into the little crevices that our vans have.

So I decided at the beginning that I was going to strip this Crafter back to a bare shell and start again.  When I removed the ply panels I found sheets of silver bubble wrap under that  I was presented with the image above, yes the dreaded sheep’s wool.  Now lots of people are going to ask what is wrong with that? well I can now confidently tell you that it must sweat because the bottom of the wool was wet.

Look at the second photo and you can see how wet it was because I could squeeze water out really easily.  This for me is proof enough not to use it.  On my previous vans I have used high density foam instead of loft insulation and I have found it to be really great, if fact last summer in our T4 we were so warm at night it was uncomfortable.
After pulling all the wool out there was another layer of foil bubble wrap but not sound proofing.  So that is the first thing I need to do I have ordered some roles of sound proofing

On another note I was taking the last bits of trim out of the van and I came across this. If there is any reason to do your own conversion this has to be it, look how much it had burnt the paintwork behind the carpet. This could have been a camper van disaster.
