Cat Ba Island Scooter Adventure: Hidden Caves & Epic Views

After what we thought was going to be a two-night Ha Long Bay cruise, we unexpectedly found ourselves dropped off on Cat Ba Island instead. Sometimes the best adventures happen by surprise, and this one turned into a real highlight of our Vietnam trip. Hiring a bike for the day, we set off on our own Cat Ba Island scooter adventure, exploring caves, a secret war hospital hidden deep in the rock, and stunning viewpoints that showed off the island’s rugged beauty.

Welcome to Cat Ba Island – start of our scooter adventure

The Journey Begins

Cat Ba Town greeted us with a mix of scooters, buses, and friendly chaos. After checking into a budget guesthouse, we decided the best way to see the island was on two wheels. For just a few pounds, we rented a scooter and hit the open road.

The freedom of riding through winding coastal roads with limestone karsts towering in the background is hard to beat. Every corner revealed another jaw-dropping view.

Key Highlights & Experiences

  • Hospital Cave – A fascinating piece of history, this three-storey hospital was carved into the limestone during the Vietnam War. Walking through its cold corridors gave us a sense of how hidden and protected it once was.
  • Epic Lookout Points – Scenic spots along the coastal road offered incredible views across the bay and surrounding islands.
  • Beach Stops – Golden sands and quiet shores gave us the perfect chance to pause, swim, and take in the calm side of Cat Ba.

Challenges & Mishaps

Like any good adventure, not everything went smoothly. The weather was overcast at times, and navigating the roads took a little patience with traffic and the occasional muddy patch. But these small challenges made the day feel even more authentic.

Local Food & Culture

After exploring, we stopped at a small roadside café where we tucked into a bowl of pho and some iced coffee. The owner, curious about our travels, shared a few local tips and smiled when we attempted our (very limited) Vietnamese. These little moments made the day feel personal and memorable.

Budget Tips & Practical Info 💸

For budget backpackers, Cat Ba is a gem. Here’s what we spent:

  • 🛵 Scooter hire – around 150,000 VND (£5) per day (was free, included in the cruise price)
  • ⛩️ Hospital Cave entry – 40,000 VND (£1.30) per person
  • 🍜 Local meal (pho + coffee) – 50,000 VND (£1.70)
  • 🏨 Guesthouse stay – from 250,000 VND (£8) per night

👉 Tip: Fill up with petrol at local stations before heading out of town, as rural areas have fewer options.

Reflections on the Trip

Cat Ba Island surprised us in the best possible way. What started as a mix-up with our Ha Long Bay cruise turned into one of the most enjoyable days of our Vietnam adventure. The mix of history, culture, and natural beauty — all easily accessible by scooter — But watch our video because if you are tight on time, we think you could miss Cat Ba Island.
